Keffiyeh

I recently noticed a marked increase in people wearing Keffiyeh's, like the scarf Yasser Arafat used to wear. There have always been some people wearing them, sometimes as a political statement, but lately I've encountered more and more girls wearing pink ones. And I don't think they wear it out of their great concern for gay Arabs :-)

I always think it's kinda lame when something iconic gets taken up by the fashion victims, it emphasizes their shallowness because they couldn't care less what it stands for. Once I made a remark to a guy wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt, when he walked away his girlfriend asked him who the guy on his t-shirt was and he replied; "oh, someone like John Lennon, I think..."

Control

We went to see the Anton Corbijn movie Control tonight. I had read it was really, really good, and it is winning awards left and right, but since it is about Ian Curtis all I could think about beforehand was suicide, doom and gloom.

I really enjoyed it. The soundtrack, the images, the guy who played Ian Curtis (he also played Mark E Smith in 24 hour party people, i think they make a joke about that in the movie), the language, etc, etc. we'll probably buy it on DVD to go with Gegen die wand and 24 hour party people :-)

flying spaghetti monster

Anyone here who hasn't heard of pastafarianism yet ? For those unbelievers, I will spread the gospel, arrrr !!

Start here (really, wonderful stuff):
http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/

The Dutch pastafarians have demonstrated with the EO, a Dutch broadcasting network, because they censored evolution theory out of nature documentaries.
There's video (in Dutch):

What triggered my posting this is an amazing piece of handiwork, the flying spaghetti monster hat. I so need to learn to crochet, LOL.

space and time

I've come across some movies that I wanted to share, first a litterally awesome video that shows you how big space is and how small the buildingblocks of our world (and the emptiness inbetween)

Powers of ten )

The second gives us a glimpse into the future:

Shift )

The third gives us a (kinda depressing) view of the reality of everyday, here and now.

Body clutter

I ordered Flylady's book Body Clutter 3 weeks ago, it won't be here for another 2-4 weeks. But today I decided I should start anyway. Not with dieting, but moving ! I cycled for 45 minutes this morning. I hope I manage to keep it up.

I made myself a ticker for my first goal (attaining a healthy BMI):

What is up with the butterflies ?

Sufjan Stevens, I got to know him rather late, at the end of 2005 when I decided I would venture back into indie-land again. I first heard Illinois and I loved it. For those who don't know, Sufjan Stevens is a musician who has taken up the project of releasing an album about each state of the USA (although from his jokes in interviews you can never be sure), he already did Michigan, put out an unrelated album, released Illinois in 2005, and an album with 21 outtakes from Illinois, titled the Avalanche, in 2006. He sure seems to have te productivity, but will he have the longevity ? Never mind, I've enjoyed the stuff he did put out.

I would've really liked to attend his concert in Paradiso on the 11th of november, but I heard about it too late to get tickets. People who were there say it was awesome.

I bet, look at the footage from his tour under the cut )

Even if you have never heard the name Sufjan Stevens before, you might know his music. His song In the devil's territory was used for a commercial by SNS reaal (here in NL at least), you know the one with big flocks of butterflies between skyscrapers ?

I was already thinking, what is up with Sufjan Stevens and butterflies ? If you saw the clip from his tour, his whole backing ensemble was dressed up with big butterfly wings (I haven't really been able to discover why), there is this commercial with all the butterflies, and he even has a song with the rather eccentric title "The Vivian girls are visited in the night by Saint Dargarius and his squadron of benevolent butterflies". (which turns out to be a reference to the work of Henry Darger, whose art is weird enough in itself) If I find something else I will post it here.

thanks to Danielle for this pic

Put the rubber mouse away,
Pick the spools up from the floor -
What was velvet-shod and gay
Will not need them any more.

What was soft and warm, is cold -
Whence dissolved the little breath?
How could this small body hold
So immense a thing as death?

Just like Flynn, LOL

This guy on the yahoo rawcat list posted this clip of him feeding his Savannah cats their raw breakfast; Dunc and I loved it. Especially the way Moja tries to steal the meat before he has finished preparing it, just like Flynn, who is always trying to steal food, gets it with his claws, etc. Difference is this kittie is trying tosteal raw food, but Flynn also loves people food, and the more refined sugar the better it seems.

Flylady

OK, I admit it, I used to be a total slob. This goes for my boyfriend too. But this summer, I found the perfect solution to a lot of my problems; Flylady ! here is her website

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Flylady does not only help you work on your house, but she also sends you inspirational emails which are meant to "flywash" you into thinking positive thoughts. She warns you that the most dangerous thing for people like me is to be perfectionistic. It is true, if I think I won't be able to do something right, I won't bother to do it at all. But I started to work on my house and myself in 15 minute increments, and it worked ! In the few months I've been fluttering my house has been transformed and my whole attitude as well.

Here is a little videoclip about flylady, featuring the lady Marla Cilley herself :
